It seems the new fashion trends among young people emerging in the 1990s and 2000s were neverending, moving through mosher, chav, emo and indie. One of the most enduring styles though is that of hipster, which, while many of the other trends faded, has seemed only to grow and spread in recent years. So, let’s take the retrospective and sift back through ‘hipstery’…
The word itself originates in the 1940s, when ‘hip’ started to be used with regards to the Jazz Age. By the age-old process of linguistic blending, this was combined with the ‘ster’ ending already extant in words like ‘gangster’, and voila! Hipster was born. The hipster of the 40s is generally defined as a middle-class white person imitating the predominantly black culture surrounding the jazz movement.
For years after it became a relatively unacknowledged idea, until the 1990s when hipster finally re-emerged as both an ideology and a fashion trend. The hipsters of the 1990s were again middle-class and white, and initially elected for a cross between grunge and punk fashion to reflect their countercultural views, and taste for alternative art, music and style.
However, it was not until the early 2000s that the hipster movement started to become widely acknowledged, drawing satire from various fronts while progressing through a series of similar fashion ideas. The basic tenets of the hipster style emerged soon enough – the jeans, the converse, the sweaters, the retrospective glasses.
This basis still exists today, with many hipsters looking back to the 60s for fashion inspiration as well as the ideologies, of freedom and free love and originality. In the 2000s various additional clothing became associated with the hipster movement, moving through chequered shirts, Dylan-esque scarves and shades, to the short-jeans, straw hats and perpetual SLR-camera bag attached at the hip.
Today’s hipster takes inspiration from all that came before; skinny jeans are an absolute must, and vintage clothing in general preferable. Converse are still a staple of the hipster look, as well as the occasional ironic or politically satirical t-shirt. Finally, the modern hipster is rarely seen without a large belt, so this is definitely something to think about.
However, the conundrum at the heart of the hipster style is inherent in the very phrase; ‘style’ is associated with fashion trends, which bind people together in a common grouping, and run contrary to the apparent hipster ideology. We have reached the most up-to-date stereotype of the hipster image, but perhaps the hipsters truest to the movement’s ideals still retain individuality and cannot so easily be earmarked.

Mens underwear has long been an ignored and underrated aspect of mens fashion – taking a back-seat in the style stakes to the more ’visible’ clothing items that make up a man’s own individual fashion sense. However, the choice of underwear can have a big impact not only on one’s overall look but also how they feel. It is no longer acceptable to ignore mens underwear and just throw on whatever grey, washed-out old pants you can find. With the array of different designer styles, fits and materials on offer in the market these days, it’s time to go shopping for mens underwear that helps you look and feel great.
Taking more of an interest in underwear is nothing new of course – women have been doing it for years. From choosing sexy underwear to help brighten up a boring day in the office, to dressing down in sensible and comfy underwear for long-trips etc… women know the value of investing time and effort in getting the right underwear for the right situation. So why do men not take the same amount of interest in underwear? Well, there are now more fashionable options than ever in the mens underwear market, from top designer brands to a variety of styles and types, so there really is no excuse.
One of the best reasons to invest in quality, fashionable mens underwear is the boost in confidence it can bring. A well-fitted pair of brand new boxers can work wonders on your self-esteem, adding that extra spring in your step as you go about your day. Good quality mens underwear is also made with comfort and support in mind – often using a blend of spandex and cotton to ensure a long-lasting fit that maintains its comfortable shape.
It’s also worth mentioning that the underwear you choose to wear shows a lot more often than you think. Every time you stretch to reach a high shelf or bend down to do your manly jobs like mess around with the backs of computers, your underwear is almost guaranteed to make an unexpected appearance. If the rest of you is dressed to impress, then an unsightly, bobbled waistband popping up is going to undo all that fashion-conscious hard-work! Make sure your style is never compromised by investing in some trendy boxers or mens briefs with a fashionable, designer waistband.
If you are really serious about how you look then you need to start thinking about what’s in your underwear drawer. Mens underwear can have a massive impact on your overall look and help you feel confident and more comfortable. So what are you waiting for? Start upgrading your underwear drawer now!
The kids are now back in school and so many of us mums now have some time to spend on our favourite hobbies. During the summer months I have been busy knitting vest tops knitted in cotton or linen yarn which were the summer’s must have items. Before we look at some of the exciting patterns and knitting yarns for sale for the autumn and winter season I’d like to look back and review some recent events.
September bought us LoveWoolUK with Wool Week from 5th September to 11th September which was a celebration of everything wool intended to harness the wool enthusiasm of people across the UK so they can become part of the campaign for wool. The event was open to anyone who has anything to do with wool! This celebration is ultimately about the sheep that bring us such a range of beautiful and sumptuous wools. The sheep on the fells and fields, the true origin of wool which grows whilst sheep graze and is shorn to give us a truly natural and sustainable supply of natural fibre for our textile industry. The grazing also helps conserve our landscape which gives us benefit both for the planet and something we can enjoy. If you missed out on Love Wool 2011 then take a look at campaignforwool.org.
The Continuous Loop project which visited Cirencester between the 5th – 7th August and allowed local and visitors alike to drop in for a knit and natter whilst also enjoying the latest developments in structural engineering practice. Toft Alpaca near Rugby hosted it’s 5th birthday and visitors competed in a speed knitting competition or just enjoyed a picnic in the alpaca field. Another popular event with families was the Just So festival which took place on the weekend of the 19th August. This festival celebrates everything from art, literature and creativity check out justsofestival.org.uk for next years event details. Over 250 artisans were selling some interesting pieces that you can’t find on the high street at the Chiltern Craft Show which was held during the weekend of 26th to 29th August in Henley-on-Thames. Visitors could also visit the stunning historic house located in the park or stroll around the beautiful show gardens, check out ichf.co.uk for future events. Heading South Brighton locals had the chance to witness an entire double decker bus covered in knitting! Participants were encouraged to obtain sponsorship for the event with proceeds going to The Martlets Hospice. Down in Devon the FibreFest 2011 event was held at Bicton College in east Budleigh between 20th and 21st August. The aim of the festival is to promote and support natural fibres and featured an exciting array of traders selling yarn and other fibre related products, visit fibrefest.co.uk for details on future events.
I took a trip down to the Ruby Country, Devon, and was lucky enough to meet with some local companies who are directly involved in the wool industry. The Ruby Country is an area of outstanding natural beauty enclosed by the upland expanses of Bodmin, Exmoor and Dartmoor and to the north by the North Devon coast. It is considered “undiscovered Devon” and is a haven of tranquillity where you can experience the peace and quiet of being off the beaten track. The Little Wool Company stock 100% British Alpaca yarns which come from their own herd as well as other reputable breeders and owners in the area. I managed to get my hands on some beautiful Artesano Yarns including Artesano superwash merino which is machine washable yarn as well as Artesano hummingbird
which is a space dyed yarn and also some Artesano 4 ply another superfine alpaca yarn which comes in a standard weight and suits me as I prefer a lighter knit.
Artesano Superwash Merino
I really like these yarns and also picked up some Artesano Aran which is made from 50% Alpaca and 50% Peruvian Highland wool. This yarn is great for the coming Autumn / Winter season as it is so warm and soft.
I also spoke to someone from Ball and Needle who some of you may know us as Nicki’s Knitting & Needlecrafts Ltd if you shop on eBay (www.ballandneedle.co.uk is their new venture). They are an online retailer of various knitting wools, yarn, needles, crochet hooks and patterns. I took the chance to have a look at their online shop whilst in my hotel and ordered some crochet cottonand hooks that I’d hadn’t manage to find elsewhere.
There is lots in store for us in the months ahead and I’m glad to have some extra time now to knit my children some hats and scarf’s for the cold days ahead. We’ve had a look at some of the interesting events that were held during the summer, now it’s time to see what’s coming up next month. The Knitting and Stitching Show will be held at London’s Alexandra Palace and runs from 10am on Thursday 6 until Sunday 9 October 2011. Like last years show there will be loads of stalls full of lovely yarns, patterns, accessories and more plus a whole load of bits and bobs from other crafts you might want try. If you are looking for inspiration then check out the exhibitions and take a look at some of the workshops where you can learn from some of the leading practitioners like Katherine Grace. There will also be the chance to learn how to revitalise your old clothes with the Upcycling Academy which is a reinvention from the popular Swishing Salon. Find out more and buy tickets here twistedthread.com
Later in the month Fibre Flurry kicks off at Saint Nicholas House in Birmingham from 28th to 29th October 2011. This is knitting and fibre industry show which includes a range of workshops which includes Art Yarn Spinning, Drum Carding, Intermediate Lace and Shawls, Sewing Skills for Knitters and Continental Knitting with Norwegian Purl. Some of this years exhibitors include Brownberry Yarns, Sheepfold, Fyberspates, Injabulo, Purlescence, Yarn Addict, The Undercover Owl and Tilly Flop Designs.Hopefully there will also be plenty of children’s workshops like they had last year to keep the little ones happy! It’s official! Fall is in our midsts. Now, for the late bloomers among us, work, and other obligations may have distracted us from the objective of shopping in preparation for the colder days ahead. Or perhaps the bevy of fall trends the high street is offering up this season is far too enticing, and we can’t begin to decipher which items need fill our wardrobe.
When in doubt, a wardrobe evaluation is a good place to start. Look at what you already own. Is there anything missing? A classic little black dress? A tailored blazer? Prim and proper trousers? Despite the plethora of available trends this season, always start with essentials given that these pieces will never go out of style. Once you’ve evaluated which basics you need to stock up on, take a second look, and see how you can integrate some of fall’s trends into your existing collection of garments. Do you wish to try to incorporate more color into your wardrobe? Or perhaps you would like to wear bolder prints?
Montreal-based style coach Monica De Liz recommends making a shopping list much like you would make a grocery list before heading out to the shops. This will keep you on track and avoid you from making impulse purchases. But of course, once you’ve marked everything off you list, have a little fun, and treat yourself to a little something extra for all the hard work you’ve put in. You deserve it!
Caterpillar aren’t just the company behind Cat boots, oh no. They are also widely regarded as one of the biggest and best leaders of earth moving machinery on the planet.
When the company expanded its product line into clothing in the 1950′s, it knew that Cat products had to be as mean, tough and rugged as its mechanical beast of a brother; worthy of holding the Caterpillar logo.
Not surprisingly, Cat pulled this off without breaking a sweat. The company says they’re “inspired by hard work and driven by life in motion”. It’s product line truly reflects this through a combination of innovative design, knowledge of materials and an unparalleled attention to detail.
For men
Cat boots aren’t just the reserve of the labouring man. Although the company has a long and proud history of being one the best suppliers of work boots – complete with steel toe caps - Cat boots are just as suited to hill walking as they are on a night out down town.
Working and hiking boots could be made of leather or suede, with or without laces. The range available for men is so vast that there is a Cat for every occasion and available in every colour of tan; the company’s trademark fade.
High quality materials go into every boot from the tip to the toe, meaning that Cat boots will nearly last a lifetime.
For women
Again, ignore the stereotype of men working with their Cat boots on the yard for a moment; Cat boots for women are sexy, comfortable and just as durable.
There are many variations of a full-length boot that wouldn’t look out of place on the catwalk of a top fashion show. Nine times-out-of-ten women’s boots are going to have leather outers providing all the same protection as a man’s boot: water resistance, strength and shine.
From outer straps to laces, the designs of the boots offer many choices for women who are looking for a niche boot; whilst on the inside, fluffy inners - that have been popular in recent years - are clearly a top draw for the coming seasons.
Hey guys my name is Jess from LWIG:Look What I Got! and I am here to show you this new polish from Revlon called Facets of Fushia. The polish retails at £4.49 at Superdrug, and let me tell you it has become a firm favourite! not only does this polish fit into the new A/W trend of jewel tones, but the glitter adds the extra je ne se qua.
The bad side of it is that it took about 2-3 coats for the colour to show up, and use a base coat if you want to keep those nails stain free. All in all it is a cute shade and I’m even rocking it on my toes as I speak! So will you give this shade a try?

Cheap is attractive! Especially when you are preparing your special wedding. I am sure everyone of you cannot refuse a charming but cheap dress! So many brides are fighting for it.
There is no way to get around it, cheap wedding dressesare a necessity for you, right?! Here are some ideas below, hope they can be of a help to reduce your wedding expenses.
Event Sales
Some bridal boutiques will give a discount when they have some events, like an anniversary. So pay attention to them, check their event time, you may be surprised!
Sample Sales
Do not miss this, you should know that a sample dress is not something bad, they are from just brides-to-be once. If you don’t mind, catch the sales. Get together with your friends. You all need to hunt for a while because most of these sales have limited time and styles. But just remember at sales like these, there are no returns. At the same time, it is also very cheap…
Clearance Sales
Often, this kind of sale is seasonal all year round. As new seasonal collections come out, older ones are discontinued, but they may not go out of style! So prepare to find them near the end of the year and check out seasonal clearance sales at your local wedding shops. As we know, some chain stores often have sales for a selection of wedding dresses which would like to offer extremely large discounts.
Used Wedding Dresses
If you still have no idea, turn to thrift stores, they will have used dresses waiting for you all the time. Mostly, a second hand wedding dress only needs minor repairs by a tailor.
Online Stores
This method is the most available one. Reasons for this? Convenient, affordable prices, various styles for you to choose from without leaving your desk. Of course, most brides prefer it though you may meet some problems like transportation, security…
They are really many ways for you to have cheap wedding gowns, you could even borrow one. If you have shopping skills, you should try as many as you can. Or go online. For most of us, you will get various results, the only problem is you need time to make the cheapest decision. After all, wedding dresses are worn only one time, so theres is no need to waste all your time and energy on it. Good luck!
Berlin is bound to play host to an interesting and delightful array of items when exploring its streets to uncover its retro and vintage past. There are plenty of vintage shops and flea markets just waiting to be discovered in this fantastic city. Be ready to discover 1950′s eastern european crockery sets, shoes from as early as the 1930′s and half decent east german 1970′s pieces of furniture for a fraction of the price found elsewhere. Home to the Bauhaus school between 1932 and 33 whose criteria was to focus on the creation of a total work of art in which all arts could be brought together, including architecture, Germany’s art and design history is bursting with iconic and kitsch design many of it hidden away in its capital city ready to be unearthed.
So where does a retro kitsch vintage magpie fly when visiting this city? One of the best places to start are most probably the notorious flea markets that pop up over the weekend in Berlin. Though overflowing with tourists Mauerpark Flea Market in Prenzlauerberg is widely accepted as a true ‘Berlin Experience’. I would advise you to turn up at the end of the day to rummage through the stock the sellers don’t want to take back home with them. Boxhagener Platz Flea market located in Friedichshain ihas plenty of vinyl, junk, crockery and second hand fashion. Be prepared to haggle for your items as all markets are run by private sellers and prices can start off quite high particularly for tourists.
A favourite shopping experience in Berlin of mine is OFT (Ohne Frage Toll) in Chaussestrasse for true vintage shopping, good vibes and aesthetic pleasure. Walking into this shop transports you back in time to a 1960′s retro kitsch underworld which specializes in lighting, interiors and clothing. OFT has plenty of high quality stock and is a must-see on your list of places to visit.
If you are willing to spend time searching through endless dizzying piles of second hand clothes in order to bag yourself a true bargain then Jumbo Second Hand maybe for you. Filled to the rim with dresses, shoes, shirts, bags, belts, you name it, it is the perfect second hand clothing destination if you don’t have too much cash to spend with a decent selection of quality stock. For shoes, make your way to Calypso with hundreds of pairs of shoes from all decades starting as early as the 1930´s, whatever you are searching for you will most probably find it here hidden amongst its rows and rows of possible delights for your feet!
Immaculate Heart located in Rosa-Luxemburg Platz is a cute little boutique. When browsing through this shop it is easy to see that all its items are chosen with love and care, combined this makes a lovely shopping experience for the customer as you don#t find yourself feeling lost searching through piles of disorganised rubbish and junk. If it is that sort of experience you are craving and it is quantity over quality you wish for your euro’s find your way to Frankfurter Tor to a second hand like department store named Humana. Filled with quite literally thousands of items over 5 floors, cheap and cheerful and most definitely worth a look. Some second hand, some vintage, you could quite literally spend a whole day in this place.
Next, for a true Berlin second hand shopping experience is Garage Berlin, famous for selling its clothes sold by the kilo. Don’t be expecting any quality items from this shop, most of its good stock is priced individually and not apart of the kilo deal, however this is perhaps a good place to go if you are handy with a needle and thread and searching for a make do and mend project. Most of its stock is pretty hit and miss but as always, the odd bargain is sure to be found. Head to Rock a Tick Vintage for plenty of second hand menswear, this shop is for the rockabilly crows specialising in American forties and fifties wear. Plenty of vintage denim and loud Hawaian shirts for your man available here.
I’m always watching what designers are up to intrigued by their inspirations, colours, fabrics, prints and silhouettes.
Here’s a very brief round up (I could ramble on for hours so shall do my very best to keep it sweet!) of my absolute favourite picks from the resort 2012 catwalk shows. O.K here goes in no particular order:
1. marc by marc jacobs- for those that know me this goes without saying. Marc Jacobs is one of those designers that comes up with something and I just think YEAH, obvs, he always hits the proverbial nail on the head. This years resort collection was no exception, bold reds sat alongside polka dots and some tropical prints thrown in for good measure. He’s also showing my personal favourite one colour ensemble look, head to toe in bold red, yes please.
2. moschino cheap & chic- a divine collection of photographic shift dresses, 40′s esque tea dresses and pretty spot dobby blouses in bright corals and staple floral skirts & Marilyn Monroe style beige mac jackets. An undeniable selection of wardrobe essentials.
3. miu miu- I know you’re probably getting slightly tired of me banging on about this collection, but seriously, even the photos are incred (just abrevin’ again FYI) love the bold coloured blouses with black bows and tailored jackets and contrast collars although must confess I’m still not a convert to a bubble skirt…I fear I may end up looking like a telly tubby, I’m too short to pull them off.
4. YSL- Argh LOVE LOVE LOVE the poppy blue print playsuit! love the nod to nautical with the classic belted sailor jacket and the 40′s ditsy floral dress oh and did I mention that sharp military red coat. BOOM WINNING
5. Alice + Olivia- I’m enjoying wearing floaty midi skirts, and I love the white one shown above worn with the black tee, I have the perfect black & white stripe wide rim floppy hat that would go with this get up. Oh and of course single colour dressing especially in pink is always strong.
